Presents findings of a project to delineate emission trading zones for sulphur dioxide (SO2) in Canada, based primarily on acid deposition considerations and to a lesser extent on ambient SO2 concentrations. The methodology used in defining those zones is outlined and the sources of data on emissions, ambient concentrations, deposition, and sensitive environmental receptors are presented. This is followed by a review of dispersion models and the selection of source-receptor relationships (SRRs), which are used to investigate the relationship between acidic deposition and SO2 emissions. The results of the application of SRR matrices to projected emissions are then given. Finally, preliminary recommendations are made for emission trading zones based on the application of SRRs to estimate wet sulphate deposition in various areas of eastern Canada.
