Jattona in the original; but Domesday book presents a more remarkable orthography, Lattme. Of the conversion of the letters L and T or I at the beginning of proper names in that record there are other instances. Thus a place in the county of York now called Yeadon, occurs in that record as Lailnn; the modern Yarum, or Yarm, is Larun, and a place now called Loversell, occurring three times, namely, in the Survey, the Recapitulation, and the Clamores, is each time written with a variety in the orthography, Geureskale, luvreshale, and Loureshale. Yatton was, as before observed, the land of Johannes Danns T. a. E., and it is surprising that Gyso has not shown us how it was acquired by the Church of Wells, to whom it belonged at the time of the Survey. It is in the hundred of Winterstoke, near to Congresbury, and has one of the many beautiful churches, the work of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with which the county of Somerset is adorned. (40.) Hywys: not found in the Domesday Survey of the possessions of the Church. It may seem, on the first view, to be the present lluixli Episcopi in the hundred of Kingsbury East, but it is plain that it was a place in close union with Yatton; and in the New Monaiticon, ii. 276, it is said to be Hyswich in the Manh.
