Forced to leave University, Jake Sperry settles for a menial job working on a lobster boat. Events take a turn for the surreal when the boat is destroyed by a nightmarish creature, and he finds himself stranded in a small town whose friendly faade is masking a terrible eldritch truth. Upon discovering that he has been fatally infected during the shipwreck, he has no choice but to turn to Tori, the Captain's sardonic daughter, who must challenge the brutal traditions of her people in order to help him. In order to survive, they must negotiate with the terrifying Sharaghul, befriend the savage merfolk known as the Merrow, and navigate the madness of a long-dead genius whose writings reveal the providence of the Elder Gods.
