I hoped it was true, but I wanted to know it for myself. Faith was not enough to satisfy me on so vast, so vital, so infinite a subject. I read and listened and wanted to believe, and I tried to be satisfied. But I could not rest, for I could not stop thinking.<br><br>I might perhaps have found repose had I not been brought up in the chilling creed of the old New England theology. But I could not accept it.
