Product Description Islamic Art IIII (1987) includes articles on almost all aspects of Islamic art: calligraphy, epigraphy, iconography, architecture, woodwork, metalwork, pottery, and historical documentation. Each of these studies offers either new material or a new interpretation of known objects or monuments. Three deal with Iran in the Ilkhanid period: two of them specifically with the area, and the principal monument of Sultaniyyah, the Tomb of Uljaytu; the third with and early 8th AH/AD 14th century manuscript and its illustrations; they are essential for any further study of Ilkhanid art in Iran and Iraq. Three studies are devoted to new objects - one Fatimid, one Mamluk, and the third Turkman, each adding a new dimension to our knowledge of the material culture and the "ideological" background of Islamic art of the respective period. Ottoman art is dealt with in two studies, bringing known material into focus, and adding new evidence for ceramic-making and painting in the wider Ottoman realm. Waqfdocuments are studied to illuminate the social and economic basis for Central Asian architecture in the 10th AH/AD 16th century. And in the final article, a dispersed, and unrecognised album of 10th AH/AD 16th century Deccani origin is partially re-assessed. About the Author Ernst J. Grube, Professor Emeritus, University of Venice, Italy; President of the Islamic Art Foundation, New York. Eleanor G. Sims, Vice-President, the Islamic Art Foundation, New York.
