"Theater almanacs are often several hundred page publications of and for the theater scene and were distributed through the book trade. They were usually conceived as periodicals, i.e., they were to appear annually, although often only one volume was published... Although the existence of numerous theater almanacs is known, they were never indexed. Research with these sources has remained relatively limited until now, possibly due to the lack of consistent indexing, except for the business sections with information on the individual theaters. This striking gap for theater-historical research is filled with the present bibliography and the accompanying index, volumes IV and V of the series Topography and Repertoire of the Theater. The illustrations, in turn, are indexed in volume VI, and a systematic evaluation of the business sections will be provided in "regional" volumes." --
