Adrian, a retired engineering lecturer, has taken his wife Jenny on a short break, mainly to stop her obsessing about the birth of their first grandchild. They start in Austria but then decide to drive down to the coast of Croatia. As they return, at the border into Slovenia, Adrian opens the boot of their hire car to find the body of Kiril, a local petty criminal.We are then taken back to both the start of their trip and the story of Kiril and his various associates, which interweave as two separate threads that come together at various points, sometimes backtracking so that we see the story from different perspectives. Eventually the stories coincide with the dumping of the body in Adrian and Jenny's car boot.Unfortunately for Adrian and Jenny, things continue to deteriorate as they get caught up in in the middle of the criminal activities, leading to a clash with the local drugs ring. Will they ever make it home to meet their new grandchild?The two streams to the story mix the light humour of Adrian and Jenny with real tension as they reach a page turning ending.
