Carl Du Prel (1839-1899) served in the Bavarian army for 13 years before retiring and giving himself over to philosophical work, with an emphasis on hypnotism, occultism and parapsychology from a modern psychological standpoint. He published numerous works on psychological, philosophical and scientific subjects, only one of which has been translated into English. Though largely forgotten and remembered only as an obscure figure in the history of occultism and neo-Schopenhauerian thought, du Prel was widely respected in his own time.Presented here is a re-edition of Du Prel’s Die Philosophie der Mystik – The Philosophy of Mysticism, Volume 1. First published in 1885, with an English translation by C.C. Massey following 4 years later in 1889, The Philosophy of Mysticism Vol 1 covers du Prel’s theorizations on the science concerning dreams, somnambulism, the metaphysical application of dreams, symbolism, and neo-Schopenhauerian philosophy.Rico Sneller is a teacher of philosophy at the Mandeville Academy and the Jungian Institute.
