This book is one of a two volume set designed to present the results of the latest research and debate on contemporary migration in Britain. It provides a ‘state of the art’ review of progress made by migration research and identifies the main opportunities and challenges which the academic community should be addressing over the next few years. The book stresses the importance of migration as a component of population change and its significance as an agent of demographic, economic and social change in a ‘post-industrial’ society. It shows that there have been major alterations in migration behaviour over the past decade and that contemporary trends in housing, the economy and society are leading to further change. The editors demonstrate that these developments raise theoretical and policy issues and chart the main aspects of migration which need more detailed investigation. The chapters are organised into five parts: migration differential, migration and housing, migration and employment, migration and social change, and the study of migration. The clear theme running through the book is of the research opportunities opened by recent work and new data sources. These provide the best conditions yet for migration researchers to improve their knowledge of internal migration in the UK.
