Sabal serrulata, R. & S,; synonym, Chamarops serrulata, Pursh; part employed, the fruit; natural order, Palma; habitat, Florida to South Carolina. Preparation.--Fluid extract of the seeds; dose, %. to 2 fluidrachms (2 to 8 C. c). Properties.--This remedy is a sedative, nutritive and diuretic, and is said to improve digestion, increasing the flesh and strength. It will also allay irritation of the mucous membrane of the throat, nose and larynx. It has been used with decided success in marasmus, phthisis pulmonalis, bronchitis, acute and chronic laryngitis, etc. SHEPHERD'S PURSE. Capsella Bursa Pastoris; part employed, the herb; natural order, Cincifera; habitat, Europe and widely naturalized. Preparation.--Fluid extract of the plant; dose, X to I fluidrachm (1 to 4 C. c). Properties.--Shepherd's Purse is now regarded, on very reliable authority, as an active diuretic, possessing also tonic and stimulant powers. It has been found useful in many forms of kidney complaint. Also in chronic diarrhoea, dropsy of the abdomen, etc. SIERRA SALVIA. Artemisia frigida. Wild; synonym, mountain sage; part employed, the hetb; natural order, Composita; habitat. Western United States. Preparation.--Fluid extract of the herb; dose, 1 to 2 fluidrachms (4 to 8 C. c). Properties.--This species of Artemisia was introduced by Dr. A. Comstock, of Silver Cliff, Col., as a substitute for quinine. In the treatment of periodic fevers, he gives a teaspoonful of the fluid extract in a glass of strong, hot lemonade, one hour before the expected chill, and repeats in 30 minutes if the stage of perspiration is not exhibited.
