Miss Meteyard tells us in the preface that the preparation of this book had absorbed her thoughts and occupied much of her time for more than fifteen years before it was completed and ready for the press; the plan of writing such a book had, therefore, originated in her mind in the very early days when the interest in old Wedgwood ware was just being revived. To prepare a costly publication on the subject, at a time when only a very limited number of amateurs could be expected to take an interest in it, required more confidence and courage than any other writer could perhaps have been able to muster. Nothing less than the womanly devotion with which Miss Meteyard felt herself inspired for the hero of her thoughts, the great man to whose memory she was to devote all her life, can explain the implicit faith she had placed on the ultimate success of her unauspicious venture.
