The need for guidance on the calibration and use of instruments to measure environmental gamma radiation is aided with this major revision of an earlier report by The British Committee on Radiation Units and Measurements. It provides information on the measurement of the air-kerma rate from low-level gamma radiation, such as may occur in the neighbourhood of a nuclear installation. This guide should be of value not only to users of monitoring instruments, but also to those who have to assess the results in relation to compliance with official regulations or recommendations.
