As state departments of transportation seek efficiencies to better manage their infrastructure, a boom in wireless and sensing technology options has presented itself. However, the capabilities of the technologies can be misunderstood, which leads to costly implementation efforts that may not leverage the full potential of such technologies. NCHRP Web-Only Document 364: Applications of RFID and Wireless Technologies in Highway Construction and Asset Management: Conduct of Research Report, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, develops guidelines for the applications of radio frequency identification (RFID) and wireless technologies for highway construction and infrastructure asset management.
