This book covers the recent progress in understanding the biological roles of carbohydrates and includes basic knowledge of carbohydrates in mammals. Emphasis in on structure, biosynthesis and function of carbohydrates in development and disease, in particular, biological significance in immune cells, neural cells and cytoplasmic and nuclear proteins. It also updates the knowledge of diseases caused by anomalies of carbohydrate biosynthesis and the animal models used to investigate the physiological roles of carbohydrates including carbohydrates attached to lipids and attempts to develop therapeutic agents based on carbohydrates.
