This volume consists of 33 full papers and 36 short papers presented at the July 2002 conference (joint sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery and IEEE) on the technical, social, and practical issues surrounding digital libraries as extensions of physical libraries, archives, and museums. Among the topics: an approach to the automatic classification of text for information retrieval, a digital library data model for music, the core services of the National Science Digital Library, an OIA gateway service for web crawlers, and a map-based library for distributed geospatial resources.
