Since lifelines have been designed and installed using the understanding available at the time of their construction, continued good performance requires changes in practice for new facilities and mitigating damage to existing facilities. Critical Issues and State-of-the-Art in Lifeline Earthquake Engineering reviews current practices and issues related to mitigating earthquake damage. Contributions reflect developments since 1992 and the lessons learned from the Northridge and Kobe earthquakes. Issues and recommendations in water and wastewater lifeline earthquake engineering, the seismic performance and risk reduction for ports and air transportation systems, and the mitigation of seismic damage to highways and railroads are examined.
