For Stendhal and Balzac, the matiere d'Italie, like the matiere de Bretagne in the Middle Ages, borders on fiction. This is the case with Russian subject matter too, which features as a symbol of individual and collective tragedy in both Stendhal's work and the Comedie humaine.
