Discusses the Aryanization and liquidation of Jewish and anti-Nazi newspaper publishing houses in Austria in 1938. Focusses on the fate of several enterprises situated at Canisiusgasse 8-10 in Vienna: Vernay Druckerei- und Verlags AG, Compass-Verlag, "Der Morgen", Kronos Verlag AG, and "Der Tag". The history of the various publishing houses was connected directly with the history of their owners and workers. Journalists and publishers who had opposed Nazism before 1938 were banned from the profession after the Anschluss, and suffered from discrimination and political and racial persecution. Due to Nazi economic interests, certain printing offices and publishing houses (e.g. Vernay and Compass) were conserved and transferred to Aryan hands. Kronos and "Der Morgen" had no funds; thus, they were quickly liquidated. Pp. 192-196 relate the fate of Maximilian Schreier, editor of "Der Tag", who was arrested several times. He was interned in Buchenwald between June 1938-June 1939, and later in the Viennese Court of Justice. In view of imminent deportation, he committed suicide in June 1942.
