More than 12,500 of his images have been published, with his photos regularly appearing in hundreds of scenic calendars, as well as magazines such as National Geographic, LIFE, and National Parks. In addition to three decades as a professional photographer, Fred spent eleven years working for the National Park Service with park ranger positions in Yellowstone, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Voyageurs, Death Valley, Petrified Forest, Lake Clark, and Florida's Everglades national parks. While at the Everglades, Fred lived at the Shark Valley Tower where he thoroughly enjoyed listening to the calls of Limpkins and barred owls while sleeping in the center of Florida's great River of Grass. Fred graduated with honors from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources in 1977.
