Published on the occasion of Hawai'i Triennial 2025 (HT25), ALOHA NO reframes preconceived notions of 'aloha,' delving into its layered meanings as a cultural practice of truth-telling, resistance, resilience, and healing. Essays by HT25 co-curators expand upon their collective and respective approaches to making an exhibition that is firmly rooted in place and understood through a Pacific lens. Also included are a series of powerful poems by Hawai'i poet laureate (2023-25) Brandy Nalani McDougall, commissioned for HT25. Hawaiian historians Dr. Halena Kapuni-Reynolds and D. Kauwila Mahi offer richly evocative historical narratives of various sites of exhibition. And the forty-nine artists and artist collectives who participated in HT25-from Hawai'i, the Pacific, Asia, and beyond-are highlighted with introductory texts and images from the exhibition. ALOHA NO will be a vital resource for contemporary art in the region connected by the Pacific.
