This report assesses recent economic developments in central eastern Europe and the Baltic states, south-eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The region experienced favourable economic growth in 2001, showing more resilience than other emerging markets to the global economic slowdown and heightened uncertainty following the events of September 11. The region is expected to see continued growth in 2002, albeit at a lower rate than the previous year.
