
This report presents in tabular form the statistical data relating to most aspects of immigration into the United Kingdom in 1999. Sections within in the report detail figures dealing with: pre-entry control abroad; entry at the control ports; asylum; after-entry control; acceptances for settlement; enforcement of immigration law; appeals against immigration control decisions; and international migration to or from the UK, by nationality. In 1999 12 million passengers (excluding European Economic Area nationals) were admitted to the UK, four per cent more than in 1998. Asylum applications in 1999 were recorded at 71,100, excluding dependants, which was 25,100 higher than the previous year. Acceptances for settlement in the UK in 1999 totalled 97,100, almost 27,300 higher than in 1998. The number of passengers refused leave to enter at UK ports and removed was 31,300 in 1999, almost a 12 per cent increase on 1998 figures.
