Language Notes Text: English, German (translation) From Publishers Weekly The 500 drawings in this catalogue comprise a broad selection of prize-winning and commended projects submitted to the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Berlin for its program of urban development. The works shown, many of which will never be built, illustrate the complex problems of modern city development, particularly when there is no dominating architectural style. The leading world architects represented here, including Rossi, Botta, Hejduk and Eisenman, offer many differing designs, and it is only the theme city of Berlin that supplies unity to this collection. Kleihues, director of the IBA, and Klotz, director of the Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, have succeeded in demonstrating the multiplicity of architecture styles and possibilities for their application to urban centers. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal This catalog, which accompanied a recent exhibit in Frankfurt, presents the winning designs of 76 architects for a major new housing development in West Berlin. Unfortunately the lack of an adequate introduction makes it impossible for most readers to comprehend the scope of this vast project and the competition behind it. Most drawings are conceptual and have little accompanying explanation, other than the designer's name and date. Fortunately many are striking works of art and can be appreciated in their own right. Over 200 of the drawings are in color and represent work by such modern masters as Meier, Ungers, Moore, and Isozaki. The first of six proposed volumes, this is for large architectural libraries. H.
