The first edition of the Register of Research was compiled in 1985 and contained 173 entries from members of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association. Questionnaires for this second edition were sent to all members in October 1986 with a reminder issued in January 1987. 181 usable replies are included in the Register constituting just over half of the members currently employed in institutions of higher education. Three changes were made in the preparation of this second edition. Most importantly the Register was extended to include research students studying for a higher degree by thesis and those who have completed their thesis in recent years. In order to gain space for these entries the 'areas of special interest' question in the original questionnaire was dropped and the index of institutions has also been omitted.
