This collection of essays is the result of a conference of renowned social scientists at the International Institute for Comparative Social Research of the Science Center, Berlin. The volume assesses an earlier research project by the editors entitled, "Conditions Favoring Major Advances in Social Science," examines these early research findings, and surveys new advances in the social sciences from 1960ó1980.
