Atmospheric emissions of mercury from various Canadian sources have been estimated for 1978 and the data are summarized. Total mercury emissions to the atmosphere in 1978 are estimated at 39,855 kg. The largest source of emissions is from base metal recovery, which accounts for 40.8% of the total. Coal combustion accounts for 12.7% and paint application for a further 12%. This study is an update of a previous inventory and attempts regulatory activity in Canada. As a result of a federal regulation for the chlor-alkali industry, emissions have been reduced by 90% in this sector. The chlor-alkali industry has been identified in the previous inventory as the primary source of anthropogenic mercury emissions in Canada. Assumptions made concerning emissions from other sectors are sometimes different from the original study, due to better information, and have therefore affected the quantifying of mercury emitted to the atmosphere from these sectors.
