Previous editions were: Ocular coagulation; a stereoscopic atlas; and Ophthalmic lasers; photocoagulation, photoradiation and surgery. This third edition differs from the previous two in that it focuses on six different laser-ocular tissue interactions that are separate in their method of production, the gross and histopathologic alteration of the impact tissue, and the ultimate pathophysiologic change in the target area. Laser-ocular tissue interactions have been divided into photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, photovaporization, photodisruption, photoablative decomposition, and phototherapy. Each interaction uses a property of a specific laser or family of lasers to produce a specific and uniquely characteristic change in the target tissue. The disease entities that can be treated by each of these specific interactions are emphasized and each of the prominent lasers in ophthalmology has been analyzed concerning its use with ocular abnormalities, its predicted ocular tissue response, and the proper technique to be employed with that laser for the best therapeutic result.
