Doctor Hurtz is a story about a kind, selfless veterinarian, who undertakes a perilous journey from the Old World because he is needed at the other side of the world, in New Zooland. He hastens to save animal children there, thinking only of his patients, never of his own comfort. On the way, he is helped by animals of the Old World. The purpose of the story is to encourage among children the love for animals and to suggest that actively caring for and protecting them is one of the best things one can do in life. Those who love and feel empathy for animals are less likely to hate other people.

It is difficult to find books that can help little children choose what they want to be when they grow up. With so many grownups around them struggling with their identities, with so many choices, and so little knowledge, preschoolers today need such help. To develop their selves and decide who they are, they need simple, non-confrontational ideals. That’s why, after decades of study and writing about our complex society, which makes identity formation so problematic, Liah Greenfeld decided to create a series of books for young children.
