It has been a half-century since the dawn of the environmental movement, and over that time the scale and intensity of environmental issues have increased. In the wake of these changes there has emerged a host of institutions across society aiming to respond to these issues, and from the very beginning education has been intimately involved. Five Decades of FES at York examines the rise of Environmental Studies programs in Canada’s higher education institutions, which it considers from the perspective of the first academic program of this kind in North America. The Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto was founded in 1968, and its history provides an interesting vantage point for contemplating the administrative and curriculum innovations that are required if society is to move towards a sustainable future.
