
The is the second novel in the The Jacks trilogy. Set in the North-West town of Monkston towards the end of the 'Swinging Sixties', we follow Detective Sergeant Steve Miller and the local detectives, colloquially known as the Jacks, as they investigate the disappearance of the landlady of a local pub, the Saracen's Head. They know that she went to midnight Mass on Christmas Eve at her local Roman Catholic Church but after that her whereabouts are a mystery. Between Christmas and New Year, a young student nurse is reported missing from the Nurse's Home at a local Mental Hospital. She too worships at the same RC Church as the Pub landlady. The Jacks' suspicions fall on the resident Priest. Is he concerned in the women's disappearances? As you would expect, the novel is full of twists and turns and the final revelations will come from out of the blue - a complete surprise.
