
Excerpt from Illinois Institute of Technology: Jul. 1964-Dec. 1964 Chicago A new test designed to predict vocational success for he blind will soon be distributed to selected agencies and vocational chools throughout the country. The test measures intelligence through the blind person's ability o recognize and assemble various objects, according to Dr. Harriett C. Hurrager, associate professor of psychology and education at Illinois nstitute of Technology. Dr. Shurrager directed the research which ed to the development of the test, called the Haptic Intelligence Scale. Supported by a grant from the Vocational Rehabilitation dministration, a department of the Public Health Service, the est kit was developed with the cooperation of over 900 people representing he nation°s blind. Some people in this country are legally lind, Dr. Shurrager estimates. And about of these are otally blind. In most states the legally blind are those who can see t a distance of 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 00 feet, she added. Dr. Shurrager explained that individuals ecognized as totally blind cannot count fingers at a distance of three eet even with visual correction.
