The book deals with civil rights, ethnic group conflict, interracial marriage, public opinion, voting behavior, and investigations of state government and local businesses. Fifteen chapters deal with employment patterns, health care, public schools, welfare programs, identifying problems and solutions. Hawai'i is compared to other parts of the United States to determine why a high degree of racial harmony was achieved during the late years of the 20th century, often using statistical measures. There are 51 tables and an extensive index.
