At the turn of the twentieth century, a generation of artists from diverse backgrounds made Paris the capital of a resolutely modern and cosmopolitan art. Montmartre was the cradle of the avant- garde; Montparnasse became its home. This effervescence gave rise to a community that was free, daring, profoundly human, and often marked by exile - known as the École de Paris. The Marek Roefler collection stands out as a unique assemblage and a major testimony to the artistic richness of the École de Paris, revealing a constellation of artists who, driven by the search for a universal language, contributed to the emergence of a plural modernity.
