Established during WW2 to advise the Pres. regarding the strategic direction of the armed forces, the JCS continued in existence after the war &, as mil. advisers & planners, have played a significant role in the development of nat. policy. This vol. describes JCS activities during the period 1957-1960 except for activities related to Indochina. Gen. Nathan Twining, served as Chmn. from Aug. 1957 to Sept. 1960. He sided with the Pres. in opposing a costly crash effort to develop & deploy missiles. He also backed Eisenhower, & opposed the Service chiefs, in concluding that modest steps would be enough to make the Soviets shy away from a confrontation over Berlin. Photos.
