The Union Bank of Scotland played an important part in the story of Scottish achievement in the nineteenth century. As its name implies, it had its origins in that phase of banking which saw the acceleration of the trend to larger size through mergers: it was eventually to become a counter in this game, being assimilated by the Bank of Scotland in 1954. This book is principally concerned with the period 1830-85, the period of the Union Bank's greatest activity and share in the leadership of Scottish banking.
