Traces the life and work of a German Jewish writer, satirist, and Zionist. Gronemann was born in Strasburg, western Prussia, where his father officiated as a rabbi. During his studies in Hannover in the 1890s he encountered antisemitism; he even secretly attended antisemitic meetings to hear what they were saying. He did not believe in Jewish-German symbiosis, and in his first novel, "Tohuwabohu" (1920), he defined assimilation as a philosophy of self-deception. During the Weimar Republic he intensified his Zionist involvement, and in March 1933 he fled with his wife to Paris. In 1936 they emigrated to Palestine. Gronemann wrote several satiric plays.
