On 5 December 2001, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) celebrated 50 years of dedication to migrants, refugees and displaced persons and countries of emigration and immigration throughout the world. This book charts the history of the Organization over the last 50 years, providing an informative overview of the international community after the Second World War, which led to the creation of IOM and UNHCR at the beginning of the 1950s. The book describes how the Organization has adapted to the widening geographical scope and breadth of the activity, and how the increasing volume and complexity in migratory patterns have challenged governments and societies in recent years.
