Discusses the organization of Jewish life in Munich and in Bavarian DP camps under American military control. Pp. 129-141 describe the U.S. Army's lack of understanding for Jewish DPs, especially in southern Bavaria under the command of General Patton who saw Jews as lower than animals. Jewish DPs were sometimes kept in camps with former Nazis and Kapos, in conditions described by the Harrison Report of 1945 as similar to Nazi concentration camps. The report resulted in better conditions and in the appointment of special army advisers on Jewish affairs. Discusses, also, Jewish participation in the black market (quoting police reports) and revived antisemitic tendencies. Pp. 345-354 describe incidents of vandalism against Jewish businesses, institutions, and cemeteries, and a demonstration in Munich by Jewish DPs against a virulently antisemitic reader's letter published in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". The demonstration was dispersed violently by the police, who shot and wounded two DPs.
