"The Story of the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center from 1951-2001. It was established due to lessons learned from the legendary Chosin Reservoir Campaign in North Korea during the winter of 1950-51. Experiences there showed a pressing need for a training program to prepare Marines for the rigors of harsh winter combat. What started as a basic cold-weather indoctrination program for the replacement draftees bound for Korea evolved over time into a year-round training facility that is a one-of-a-kind for the entire Department of Defense. During its 60-year history the MWTC evolved into what is today the best venue for the USMC to develop confidence and leadership skills for the Marines that train there. I was stationed there as an instructor-guide in the early 1960s, and would return as a regimental commander and later as the Commanding General, 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade." -- Harry Jenkins, Jr., Major General, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) Foreword/Preface/Introduction Table of Contents Chapter 1: The Sierra Nevada Range Chapter 2: U.S. Marine Corps Cold Weather Experience and Doctrine Prior to 1950 Chapter 3: The Marines Arrive Chapter 4: Cold Weather Battalion's First Year Chapter 5: Making Improvements, 1952-1956 Chapter 6: Expanding the Mission, 1957-1958 Chapter 7: Winners Never Quit, 1958-1961 Chapter 8: Mountain Men, 1962-1965 Chapter 9: In the Doldrums, 1966-1979 Chapter 10: NATO's Northern A New Imperative, 1979-1983 Chapter 11: Ascending New Heights, 1984-1990 Chapter 12: The 1990 A Post-Cold War World Epilogue Notes Appendix Lineage and Honors, 1951-2001 Appendix List of Commanding Officers, 1951 to Present Appendix List of Sergeant Majors, 1958 to Present Appendix Department of Agriculture and Navy Joint Policy Index
