[Excerpt from FOREWORD by JAMES HADDAD Director, Poulsen Galleries, Inc.] I can remember back during the Depression when Mrs. Poulsen, my mother, would be at the sales counter with one of the name artists of the time discussing framing of the recently finished painting. In a large number of cases, the artists had to have the painting framed for the buyer before the artist would be paid. Poulsen's extended themselves many times with rushes and credit to help these artists survive. The time demanded a sense of community and there were many tokens of appreciation given the Poulsens from these thankful artists. Many of the frames made during these earlier times were designed by Mr. Poulsen, whose european training made carving, ornamentation, and gilding a natural for these California paintings. These frames were made on the premises from the raw wood and some were even named after the artist. These frames were extensively copied later by other framers and became a California tradition. The Poulsen association with the California artists started in 1 927 and there has always been representation in the gallery. Originally at 62 South Lake Street, it has moved several times along South Lake to its present larger location. I believe it is the oldest South Lake Street business-61 years. It is with great pleasure that we continue the tradition with our latest exhibit of fine paintings by many California artists. There are big names but there are also a large number of the less familiar names. I believe that this makes the exhibit more exciting from the standpoint of the viewers and the collectors.
