Texts by Donald Kuspit, Rudi Fuchs and Johannes Gachnang. Karl Appel (b. 1921, Amsterdam) has had a long and triumphant career as one of Europe's foremost post-war painters. His early involvement with the famed avant-garde artist's group CoBrA (which stood for Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam) led to an interest in folk art, children's art, and art by the mentally disturbed. This interest in "outsider" art, which pre-dated the current interest by almost fifty years, influenced the work collected in this book.
