Traces the history of the Philo-Verlag publishing house, which was founded in 1919 in Berlin as a component of the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens. Its history represents a part of German Jewish identity and German Jewish history. Philo-Verlag became a "Jewish" publishing house only in 1933, by decision of the German authorities; its trend before 1933 was characterized by the defense of humanistic principles, and after 1933 by engagement and moral resistance against antisemitism, especially through the publication of books against the danger of antisemitism, and by brochures and pamphlets. On 31 December 1938 the Gestapo brought the activities of the publishing house to an end.
