The articles in this volume, presented at a workshop organized by the Centre for Cultural Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, are concerned with what was seen, heard, experienced and suffered in Austria in March and April 1938. They reflect various interests including photograph albums of the police in Vienna documenting the changes of the then executive forces views of the public sphere, the graphic and linguistic peculiarities of national-socialist leaflets, the audio-visual medium of the Wochenschau, the musical elements of the large Anschluss-stagings, the rituals of humiliation and pogrom-like acts of violence known as Reibpartien, and the aesthetic ambition using central historical spaces like the Heldenplatz in Vienna, which was declared Greater Germanys Thingstatte. The contributors to this volume have come from a number of divergent disciplines, trying to shed new light on and gain insight into the Anschluss from the particular perspectives of their respective fields, which makes this publication an innovative contribution to the field of contemporary historical studies.
