Author Description

This book is a history of what happened at the University of Vienna following the 1938 Anschluss. Most Jewish students were forced to leave the university; a few who were near graduation got special permission to take the final classes or exams needed to complete their degrees. The conditions they encountered -- including mistreatment by professors and other students -- were not pleasant. The book documents by name the students who were required to leave the university and traces their fate. The book is based on a combination of social science analysis and extensive interviews with people who were students at the University of Vienna in 1938.
