For some years after he arrived in Sydney in 1888, Howard Joseland would travel to Tasmania and New Zealand in his quest to catch trout on fly. Then, in February 1901, he fished the Snowy for the first time, at Dalgety. He fell in love with the Monaro and its rivers, despite failing to catch trout on fly on either of his first two trips. He learned how to tie flies. He observed the insects in and around the waters he fished, and tied patterns to imitate them. He worked hard to develop broader community interest in fly fishing and came to be regarded as the state's leading fly fisher.Stories often change through retelling, or are forgotten, or lost. In this archive, the events of Howard Joseland's life are rediscovered and brought together, adding significantly to our knowledge of the man and New South Wales and Australian angling history.
