The Commonwealth Games, formerly the British Empire Games, have always been a major part of New Zealand's sporting scene. In this book there are chapters on each of the first fourteen Games from 1930 to Auckland in 1990, discussing issues such as venues and politics, and highlighting the personalities of the Games, especially competitors from New Zealand. Selected individuals are profiled in boxed sections which give their full Games careers and medal counts; these include Murray Halberg and Precious McKenzie. Also included are chapters on the origins of the Games, a full list of every gold medal won at the games since 1930, plus a bibliography.
