1925. The poet Josephine Preston Peabody kept a diary from early youth. In her early life, she found few to share her interests, therefore her diary became her confidante. This habit continued even when friends and a happy marriage had given her the sympathetic and stimulating companionship she craved. The selection of material from these diaries and letters was chosen with two thoughts in mind: first, the outward activity of a life is largely determined by environment and chance, therefore these selections are chosen concerning her thoughts, ambitions, arts she loved and the joys she created for herself. Second, the urge of the creative artist dominated her life, so emphasis has been placed on the growth of a creative artist.
