Medicine in the Porcupine Camp has gone through a great evolution in the past 80 years. This is the story of the journey from the lone doctors working in remote outposts for the Hudson's Bay Company, to the building of a large regional health care facility with a team of dedicated specialists and general practitioners. From the early days when men of medicine used anything at their disposal, " a pocket knife given to me by a peddler" to the age of telemedicine and CT scanners. This chronicle of the Porcupine District Medical Society showcases that journey and highlights many of the important contributions northern physicians have made to the health of the people of Timmins and area and, consequently, to the health of Canadians during its 80 years of existence.
