The Times Jumbo Crossword Collection contains 110 large cryptic crosswords to challenge the enthusiast, originally published in the newspaper between 1996 and 1999. The first Jumbo crossword appeared for Christmas 1970. It was compiled by Edmund Akenhead who made the original choice of a 27 by 27 grid, as used in all the crosswords in this selection. Originally published for Bank Holidays, the Jumbo Crossword became a weekly publication in 1997. The Jumbo is not simply a larger version of the daily Times cryptic crossword; it gives its compilers a chance to exploit the clueing possibilities sometimes of words, but more typically phrases, titles and quotations that will fit the large grid.
