The shocking attack on the post box in Burley Cross before Christmas has exausted Sergeant Laurence Everill and he has handed the task to PC Roger Topping. Topping is submerged in a splendid array of weird and wonderful curtain-twitching characters who inhabit the village, where pettiness is epic and everyone's secrets are worn on their sleeves.
